Repairers from hell
Someone sent me an email on 4 October 2026, as he was unhappy with the CLA (Clean Lubricate Adjust) done on his F2 body by a repairer in the US, which costed him $229. That repairer told him even after the CLA, fast shutter speeds were too fast, eg 1/1000s was 1/3200s. He even told him that the fast shutter speeds on 30% F2s cannot be adjusted accurately, so it was not unusual.

I was shocked by the cost of the sub-basic service. It is untrue that a high proportion of F2s cannot be adjusted to within specification. Even with my basic service, I can adjust fast shutter speeds to at least 1/3rd stop accuracy. Even novices attended my bi-annual F2 workshop courses were able to adjust all fast shutter speeds on their F2s to at least 1/3rd stop accuracy, including 1/2000s, so there is no excuse for a pro-repairer cannot do that.

I suspect this repairer only gave that F2 a quick external refoam and test, lasting no more than 1 hour and called that a CLA at $229. It’s unprofessional and daylight robbery, but sadly shoddy work is common in this profession as I have found over the years.
